Birralee Kindergarten is a privately owned centre which has been servicing the community and providing quality child care for the past 30 years. Originally located on the corner of Lincoln and Bindea Streets where the Presbyterian Church is now located. Birralee was started by a local, Mrs Nancy Campbell. Birralee had several owners throughout the years finally purchased in 1984 by current management. During the 1994 bush fires Birralee was burnt to the ground, and was temporarily relocated in Mulyan Street on a block of land donated rent free by the Catholic Church. Birralee purchased a demountable building and with help from family and friends and encouragement by the Como community re-established within four weeks of the bush fire. On 16th September 1996 Birralee relocated to Bindea Street and once again became tenants of the Presbyterian Church.
At Birralee Kindergarten we offer a service that aims to provide high quality child care by promoting the physical, social, emotional and cognitive development of young children and by responding to the needs of the family.
We believe that each child comes to the centre with a different set of experiences, knowledge and interests. We seek to build on the child's home experience and acknowledge the diverse range of backgrounds in families. The families are valued and their diverse backgrounds are accepted and reflected in our programs.
The Way Staff Interact with Children:
We seek to provide a warm, safe, caring, stimulating environment that meets the developmental needs of each child.
We seek to know each child, based on observation and interaction and provide experiences that match each child's unique interests and development.
We believe that play is essential to young children's learning.
We endeavour to meet the needs of children's natural curiosity by providing opportunities for them to experiment, discover, solve problems and find out about themselves, other people and the world around them. We believe that social interaction is invaluable and gives opportunities for children to value diversity, to accept and enjoy differences in other people, their customs and themselves.
We believe that language and learning go hand-in-hand - language increases a child's understanding. Mother-tongue language will be fostered alongside the development of skills in English.
We believe that each child has the right to develop a strong Sense of trust and self-esteem, dignity as a human being and self-respect. Care and respect for others will be promoted.
Each child should have opportunities and guidance to develop self-discipline and the confidence to make choices, take responsibility and achieve independence.
