Como Pre-school has provided a quality educational program for children aged 3-5 for over 50 years. It is a community based non-profit organisation funded and licensed by Community Services and managed by a parent committee.
We have 40 children per day divided into 2 groups. Two large air conditioned rooms have a wide range of quality resources.
Our playground features large shady trees, swings, a cubby house, sandpit, garden area and a range of challenging, fun equipment.
Staffing
We have a University trained Early Childhood Teacher and an Assistant in each room. Depending on current funding, we have experienced staff to work with children who have additional needs.
Hours
Normal hours are Monday to Friday 9am - 3pm. An 8:30am start and/or 3:30pm finish is available for a limited number of children if required. We are closed during Public school holidays.
Parent Involvement
Parent involvement is a strong feature of our Centre. You are always welcome and encouraged to become as actively involved as you would like.
Excellence in Early Childhood Education is achieved through a partnership between a dedicated professional staff, parents and their children.
Our Program
The children’s day is stuctured so that there are specific times for indoor and outdoor play, routines, group music and movement and story and language activities. Within this structure, children choose from a range of developmentally appropriate activities. We believe that “all children are capable and resourceful... and have their own unique strengths and abilities.” We value the active contribution of each child to their own learning to ensure that the environment reflects their interests and needs.
School readiness is an integral part of the program for our 4 year old groups which enables the children to move confidently from Pre-school to school. We offer Parent Teacher interviews during the year prior to school to discuss your child’s readiness for school.
Additional Needs
We welcome children with Additional Needs into our centre whenever possible, depending on current funding and on the number of children with additional needs already enrolled. Our experienced staff work with the children individually, in small groups and within the whole class.
We work in partnership with families and other support services to provide the best possible program for all children. If your child is involved in any other support service eg occupational therapy or speech therapy or if he/she has any specific behavioural, developmental or health issues that we should be aware of, please contact the Director to arrange a meeting to discuss their needs.
Food
We provide an environment which encourages children to make healthy lifestyle choices in relation to hygiene and nutrition.
Children bring their own morning tea and lunch in separate containers. They also bring a water bottle which is kept in a cooled esky so that children may have a drink anytime during indoor and outdoor play. We are a “NUT FREE” Centre so families are advised not to bring in any foods which list nuts as an ingredient.
Quiet Time
Children are not required to have a rest on a mattress in the afternoon but they may do so if they are very tired. Following lunch and outdoor play the children come inside for quiet activities before home time.
Age of Children
Children must be 3 years of age and toilet trained to commence Pre-school. If your child turns 3 during the year you wish them to commence, they will be offered a position if a vacancy occurs. Priority is given to children in their year prior to school.
4 year olds (ie. those eligible to attend school the following year) may attend:
Monday, Tuesday OR
Thursday, Friday OR
