Philosophy
At Engadine Gumnut Child Care Centre we seek to provide a warm, safe, caring, stimulating and home-like environment that meets the developmental needs and interests of each child in our care. We believe children learn best through play-based learning which is child-initiated and provides the opportunity for each child to be seen as competent, social, healthy, curious and resourceful learners. It is our belief that the quality of experiences, environment and the positive relationships built between educators, children, families and the wider communities will have a strong influence on children’s success in later life.
Gumnut Child Care Centre believes that the foundation of our practices to foster children’s learning and development reflects the Early Years Learning Framework. We endeavour to meet these educational visions by developing:
1. Secure, respectful and reciprocal relationships. Displayed through:
Nurturing a mutually supportive environment which supports and strengthens family ties
Positively interacting with children though open communication to listen to their thoughts and feelings
Encouraging children to develop self-discipline through positive guidance
Establishing an understanding of the importance of team work and collaboration amongst children, staff and families.
Meeting the interrelated needs and changing needs of parents and children
2. Partnerships: Displayed through
Supporting and encouraging the interest and involvement of parents to share in making this centre an extension of home. We also support and encourage parent’s questions and suggestions regarding the continual review of our Philosophy and goals.
Encouraging parent involvement in the management of the centre and the programming for their children.
Communicating freely and respectfully with each other to share insights and perspectives about each child
Liaising with other community groups and services to develop support networks for the benefit of children’s needs.
3. High expectations and equity. Displayed through:
Staff regarding all individuals equally and providing equal and unbiased opportunities for both boys and girls to develop to their full potential regardless of race, religion, gender or disability
All children have a right to feel confident about themselves and to believe that their contributions are worthwhile. Our programs will endeavour to provide all children with the opportunity to make choices, to make mistakes and try again.
Providing children the opportunity to develop socially, emotionally, physically, creatively and intellectually at his/her own pace.
4. Respect for diversity. Displayed through:
Recognising that each child comes to the centre with a different set of experiences, knowledge, interests and developmental needs.
Acknowledging the range of cultural backgrounds of our families and having a genuine regard for all children, their language and culture, while endeavouring to meet multicultural needs within our programs. We will achieve this through implementing policies and practices which respond to the multicultural needs of the children and families. Parents who wish to share their cultures eg language, food, music, national dress, etc are most welcome to do so.
Providing opportunities to explore similarities and differences
5. Ongoing learning and reflective practice Displayed through:
Providing child care students and trainees with practical experiences within the child care field, while under constant supervision.
Engaging in professional reflection, self reflection and appreciation/reflection with our peers to examine current practices, outcomes and children’s well being
Providing an environment which maintains high standards of health, safety, nutrition and hygiene, while constantly researching and supporting the transition to a chemical free centre.
Child/Parent Orientation Process
AIM: To make the transition to Gumnut a pleasant and rewarding experience for both parents and children who are to start at our centre. To also help the parents to feel comfortable with their decision to leave their children in the care of Gumnut staff.
IMPLEMENTATION:
Waiting List:
Parent wishing to have their name added to our waiting list will be invited to visit the Centre and see how the Centre operates before being added to our waiting list.
The Director or Authorised Supervisor will offer to take the parents through the Centre for a tour of relevant rooms for that child. A brief outline of the centre activities will also be explained to the parents.
The parents will then be asked for the relevant information to allow us to complete our waiting list form and will be advised of the possible timing before being offered a place.
Actual Enrolment:
As soon as we are able to confirm a place for any child the parents will be contacted and advised that they are required to visit the Centre in order to complete the enrolment process.
When the parent visit the centre they will be handed the relevant information and forms including:
- Enrolment Forms- Parent Handbook
- Daily routine sheets- Fee structure sheets
- Medication Information sheets - Orientation booking form
The Director or Authorised Supervisor will sit down with each child's parents to obtain relevant background information e.g. immunisation records and family background
The Director or Authorised Supervisor will explain the procedures for fees and deposit payments.
Orientation Process
The Director/Authorised Supervisor will arrange for new children to attend the centre for short periods together with one or both parents prior to starting, which will be organised based on individual needs. This is to reassure young children that parents will return to collect them. The children may participate in centre activities if they wish. A number of young children just prefer to watch rather than do initially.
An Orientation form will then be discussed, with a minimum of two visits booked into the diary at a convenient time for the family, children and staff. The times of orientation are flexible and worked out between the Director and parent keeping in mind the routines happening in the room. Orientation visits can be booked for up to as many as seen necessary for the individual child.
Orientation Visit
Parents come with child for a full 45 minutes in the child's room, bringing bag and hat for a practice run. At this first Orientation the Director will ask if the parent has any concerns or questions.
During the 0rientation visit parent and children will be introduced to each staff member in the room and the room they will be attending as well as other staff in the centre.
Parent/s and children will be encouraged to participate in the activities.
The Director/Authorised Supervisor will explain our programming system and other relevant policies in greater detail and answer any questions the parents may have. Parent are also given the "Starting your child letter".
First Day At Kindy:
The child's first day at kindy, this is a very big day for parent and child. It is important that parents remain very positive and confident about kindy in the first few weeks of settling in to kindy. It is also very important that our parents do not get upset in front of their child
It is our policy to encourage upset parents finding it difficult with settling their child into kindy to drop them off promptly and wait in the carpark for the director. The Director will join the parents minutes after they have separated from their children, the parents will be encouraged to come back inside to have a peek at their child so they can see they have in fact settled down rather quickly after the separation. Parents may also telephone the centre as many times as they wish during the day to reassure themselves that the child has settled in.

I dont think that it's that easy to single out any individual contribution at Gumnut as it is the many and varied contributions that are the heartbeat of this center. Each and every one of you dedicated ladies has had an impact on my 3 sons! No matter what time of day- 7:30am or 6:00pm, someone loving is always there . To me, this is the most important thing- while I am at work I know that my boys are loved and cared for.....all the other wonderful things you all do are a bonus! Each of you have wonderful gifts and talents that are so VERY obvious through the experiences and interest you offer and take in the boys. Each one of you sees their individual potential- not just as boys of a family- this is particularly important as Christian and Tristan are never lumped together as twins - their individuality is respected- THANKYOU! I love all the different activities you do as teachers as well, the artwork of the children is celebrated and it never looks like a carbon copy from a factory- thankyou for letting our budding artists express their unique beautiful talents- I never tire of what they create!!!
You are truely a wonderful set of ladies and educators, youre replacement mums to my boys and nothing is more appreciated than this!
I love the smell of Jodie's cooking as it wofts around- it smells like home and I know the boys will eat so well- I want to stay- we dont eat this endless variety at home.
I love Deanna's ALWAYS cheerful and happy manner- I have never seen you look anything but bubbly- you have a smile and a chat to all parents and more importantly all children- it's infectious! You always take the time to say hello- I really wish the world was like you! You're a true early childhood educator.
Thankyou Clare, you always, always talk to my sons- they aren't in your room, but you always have a chat- it makes me thrilled to know that they have met you as they realize people value them! It's so easy to overlook people in this world that you dont have direct contact with but you never do this- its such a strong feature, and I appreciate it.
Thankyou Roz, I am glad we go you! Your bubbly vibrance rubs off on the kids around you- they see you smiling and having fun and so they do too!
You're made for this.
Ahh Katie- thankyou so much for being you- I have known you since the beginning of our time at Gumnut- you were my first taste of childcare and I couldn't have been more lucky! I tear up thinking about you- you are just wonderful- graceful and SO SO SO genuine! I feel happy that my boys spend time with you- your love and warmth - you interest- well i love it all!!!! Thankyou!
Peta, thankyou for being such a wonderfully talented and inspiring teacher - I wish the primary system had lured you ( we could do with more of you in every school). You're talent is in you ability to draw out the very best- your dedication to Lachlan - you gentleness and guidance has seen my little boy blossom- THANKYOU, from the very bottom of my heart. I truely have not met a more patient person, you're a beautiful soul. Thankyou for always taking the time to talk to me, no matter how trivial my concern might seem- I always feel comfortable with
you- I think that I like this about you so much- you never trivialise anything- so important to a parent. I am glad you have been with Lachie as he has grown.
Last but by no means least- maybe I saved the very best for last.....Alicia! You're AMAZING!!! I honestly don't know how you do it!
You're genuine loving nature made Christian and Tristan comfortable so very quickly, you filled in as a second mum to my 2 little boys so well- it made me thrilled to hear them tell me they wanted to see you each preschool
day- knowing that they were so so loved, but it also broke my heart- but in the end I realise that I couldnt have wanted to share them with a better lady! You have restored my faith in true love of a profession.
You have taken the time to get to know Tristan and Christian as individuals not as twins ( and I really noticed that) You never lumped them together- you instantly learned who was who and you always speak like you know them-and you do - you say stuff that you can only know by taking a total interest in them and their interests ....I think this is so your unique talent- you got to know the individual- THANKYOU SO MUCH.Alicia I admire the lady you are, you dont do things by halves - I dont think I have ever warmed to someone so quickly. Thankyou for loving my sons.
Lastly Kim and Allyson, you are wonderful, thankyou for having the insight to hire the right ladies as well as the dedication to your center to constantly provide the very best- youre inspirational business ladies as well as a WONDERFUL and very complimentary team! Youre sparkle and humour - I love it!
Thank you ALL so much for a wonderful year.
Not only for your beautiful smiling faces at the start and end of each day, especially when my two have been bad, but for you ongoing dedication to each and every child.
Not only do I want to thank you for your day to day work, but its the things that you do behind the scenes that go un-noticed that I really want to thank you all for. The extra unpaid hours that you do. The computer work, the cutting out for craft activities, washing, portfolios, cleaning, menus, washing of toys, phone calls, fundraises, special guest, special events, meeting and educational courses to name a few, that make such a huge difference to our children's days at Gumnuts.
Every staff member of Gumnuts has such an important and unique roll in the centre and this is the one thing that makes you all wonderful carers in all aspects of the centre. You ALL have such a wonderful spirit, and it shines in the faces of not only my children but ALL the children that you care for.
As a parent of small children, I feel so very blessed to have my children being looked after by such wonderful, dedicated and truly exceptional people. Your natural instincts are truly evident by the overwhelming smiles and hugs I see my children and all the children give out when starting and ending their day with you.
Thank you for making my little ones the best that they can be and acknowledging their full potential in all areas of their Kindy days.
A big thank you to you all for all of your love and support that was given to myself and my family in the last 3 months. When tragedy struck you all went above and beyond the call of duty to help myself and my family in such a difficult time. Then, a week later, when I gave birth you all jumped up again to accommodate my children's needs to help me in the worst and the best time of my life. I was overwhelmed by the support and could not of been able to cope without it. You truly are my angels.
Thanks also for the great pleasure of letting me work beside you all. I loved working with you, and it was even more amazing to get to watch and learn from you all.
Wishing you all the very best for Christmas and can not wait to see you all in the new year.

PROGRAM POLICY
AIM – All children need to feel that they are valued as individuals and capable of achieving their full potential. We aim to provide a program that is individually and developmentally appropriate with children’s home language, culture, religious beliefs and interests incorporated.
RATIONALE: At Engadine Gumnuts we acknowledge that children of all ages learn in a variety of ways and vary in their capabilities. We believe in fostering children’s learning and development by encompassing the practices outlined in the Early Years Learning Framework.
We promote children’s learning by:
Adopting holistic approach
Children’s physical, personal, social, cognitive, emotional and spiritual wellbeing are observed in relation to the five learning outcomes stated in the EYLF framework ie
Children have a strong sense of identity
Children are connected with and contribute to their world
Children have strong sense of wellbeing
Children are confident and involved learners
Children are effective communicators
Being responsive to children
All children are observed in relation to the ELYF outcomes with Educators being responsive to their ideas, interests and play. Educators record this information in individual journals through observations, photos and work samples which are then reflected upon to allow educators to build on children’s strengths, skills and knowledge.
Planning and implementing learning through play
Children are given the opportunity to discover, create, improvise and imagine through planned and spontaneous play experiences and routines with educators, peers and the environment. Educators take the time to sit and converse with children to extend their thinking in a supportive environment. Educators adopt the ‘solution chart’ during experiences where supporting the inclusion of all in play is required to ensure fair play and positive ways of dealing with conflict.
Intentional teaching
Educators look at each child’s needs and interests and will plan objectives to meet these needs/interests by providing experiences which challenge and extend children’s thinking and learning through modelling, demonstrations, open questioning, problem solving and engaging in shared thinking. These experiences are documented in the child’s individual journal with educators given allocated programming time each week to plan extension experiences.
Creating physical and social learning environments that have a positive impact on children’s learning
Educators program and provide an indoor and outdoor environment which allows for a balanced opportunity for quiet time, individual, small and large group times, adequate rest periods. The environment covers fine and gross motor skills, art and craft, music, language, maths and science, nutritional education.
Valuing the cultural and social contexts of children and their families
Provisions are included in the program to develop positive attitudes and awareness towards cultural differences. We acknowledge that each child comes to the centre bearing their own cultural practices and we value the importance that these practices have on the child, their family and the wider community. Special activities are arranged during the year to allow all family members and other members of the community to participate in the centres activities. These include Crazy Hair Day (cystfibrosis), Easter, Chinese New Year, Australia Day, etc to develop awareness and understanding.
Providing for continuity in experiences and enabling children to have successful transition
Educators take the time to have friendly interactions with children individually and respond to them warmly. Through these interactions educators endeavour to ensure that children feel safe, secure, confident and included. Educators plan an orientation and transition process whilst also collecting updated children’s profiles to encourage a smooth transition from the home setting to Engadine Gumnuts. During this period Educators assist children in the understanding of routines, expectations and begin to establish relationships between educators and peers. News time is another opportunity provided for all children to share home and out of Child Care experiences with peers and Educators.
Assessing and monitoring children’s learning to inform provision and to support children in achieving learning outcomes.
Observations are documented on each child within an ongoing cycle with checklists being completed every 6 months to determine where each child is at and what they understand. This information is then discussed in partnership with families to communicate child’s learning and plan effectively for future learning.
Programs and experiences are evaluated daily with Educators recording one special activity that each child has been involved each day they attend Gumnuts. These activities are written in the daily diary and are emailed to families and displayed next to the notice board in the foyer for families to view. All previous plans are available for parents to view in each room and on request. All records are confidential and remain the property of the centre. Individual journals are available for parents to look at on request and will be discussed on Parent/teacher week. Parents are encouraged to ask any questions, we welcome their interest and suggestions.
Pre-school Program
Engadine Gumnuts Pre-school is aimed towards giving your child greater confidence and self –esteem in preparation for Big School. Gumnuts currently has two staff with Bachelor of Teaching and Bachelor of Education degrees from university, who overview and help plan for our Preschool children.
Pre-school is an exciting time for your child where the teachers focus on further development of their pre-writing, pre-reading, pre-maths skills and social/emotional development. These activities are planned for the children to stimulate their mind and challenge their thoughts, while remaining fun, appealing and appropriate for their individual development.
OBJECTIVES FOR PRE-SCHOOL
Our main objectives for our Pre-schoolers are:
Socially and Emotionally
To try their best, be happy and develop an enthusiasm for learning
To progress at their individual pace
To build confidence and self-esteem

To practice moving from left to right with a pencil

To identify likeness and differences
To understand concept of sequence – first/last
Preschool Activities are ongoing throughout the year and incorporate many activities throughout the day, catering for the 3-5 year olds. All children in our Preschool room participate in:
News time –To build self-esteem and confidence in front of a large group of children. Each child will have a special news day, once a fortnight, where they are encouraged to stand up in front of their peers and answer questions and talk about something special. The remaining children have the opportunity to listen to their friends and then ask questions, raising their hand for a turn.
Writing centre (use of appropriate writing tools) – Children have access to these at all times, including HB Pencils, triangle grip pencils, scissors, handwriting tracing cards, foundation style alphabet practice sheets and name cards.
Independence – Looking after their own belongings, housekeeping e.g. making their own bed, helping set the table, packing away, toileting and shoes on and off.
Social Skills – Turn Taking, Waiting for a turn, sitting in small and large group experiences for 10-15 minutes, assisting and guiding peers, participating in group games and movement, engaging in co-operative play activities and Story Telling.

Pre-Reading Activities – group and individual story times, group games, table top activities such as “Make a word”, letter threading, pattern cards, lotto, the alphabet game and much more.
Pre-writing Activities – Our writing centre and Pre-school Program folders (for our Big School leavers). Computer – Education programs that cover all the above areas of development.
Structured Activities throughout the day include: Specific Focus Groups of approximately 8-10 children, Large group discussion, with 20 children, Large Language group times, Large Music and movement group times, News time & question time, Weather chart, Roll Call.
Pre-school Program
In March of each year parents, from within the centre and from outside the centre are all invited to our Pre-school information night. This night will help parents to understand the structure of our Pre-school and to see first hand some of the wonderful activities and experiences your child can participate in as they prepare for big school.
Starting in May during rest time all children who are in their final year at Gumnuts will start working on their school journals which include activities on Pre-writing, Pre-reading and Maths. Each day children will be given one worksheet or activity to complete, based around our above mentioned Pre-school objectives. The children will be given simple 2-3 step directions as a small group and then asked to complete the activity independently, although their teacher will never be too far away for support. These activities will help develop hand-eye co-ordination and reinforce correct pen grip and correct motor movements with the emphasis on trying their best and becoming FAMILIAR with these types of activities, not on the end result.
At the end of each year the Pre-schoolers are given school readiness reports and checklist to be given to their schools, if required.
A vital part of the success of the pre-school program is the praise and encouragement that the children receive. We aim to develop a great enthusiasm for learning within your child.
Teachers work at each child’s pace and offer full support and praise for effort, trying hard and the process they work through, rather than the resulting piece of work.
All families are invited to approach their child’s teacher at any time during their child’s time at Gumnuts to discuss transition to school and school readiness. We currently have extensive information sheets on school readiness checklist and journal articles for parents to access, photocopy or borrow at any time.
Parent Involvement Policy
Parents are encouraged to be involved in the operation of the centre. Parent's wishes are taken into account regarding the extent of their involvement with the centre.
Communication and Family Activities
Parents are welcome visitors at any time. Parents and other family members are encouraged to share a cultural activity with the children such as craft, cooking, musical experience or reading a story. If you are interested please see a teacher and place your name on the Parent and Family Member Help Roster in the foyer.
Special activities are arranged during the year to allow all family members and other members of the community to participate in the centre's activities. These include Easter and Christmas festivities, and other special occasions where we have visitors from the Fire Department, Musicians, Puppeteers and Dental Therapists.
Parents and Family members can actively participate at Engadine Gumnuts in many ways.
Getting to Know You Help Roster. This roster is always located on the foyer notice boards. When you would like to come and be involved in the centre just let a teacher know the time and date and fill it in on the roster in the foyer. We would love to get to know you and your family better so come along and sing a song, read a story, play an instrument, share information about your career or perhaps plan a craft activity.
We hold Easter and Christmas festivities, which include morning teas, concerts and parties that all parents and family members are welcome to join us on such occasions. Children graduating from Gumnuts also have a ceremony, which all parents attend. We also hold a Friday night Disco once during the year.
We have a parent Teacher Week where parents book in a time slot to see their child's focus teacher to discuss all their areas of development
We have available in the foyer a parent/staff communication form where parents put in writing a particular request, whether if be for the importance of having breakfast or stranger danger. A child's Focus teacher will then assess the communication and plan to meet the request.
A notice board in the foyers will also help to convey centre information to parents including Staff meeting minutes, community notices, upcoming courses etc.
Child Profile Updates are handed out at regular intervals throughout the year. This information is invaluable to connecting your child's home experience to the centre. This also help build continuative of care for your child's development.
Monthly Newsletter notifies parents of forthcoming events and will be found in your child pocket. The newsletters will also include information on matters of interest to parents regarding child health, safety and other matters.
Communication Books. The 0-3 year olds will be given a communication book on their first day at Gumnuts. We will write in this book daily to tell you a little bit about your child's day and to send home informal messages. It can also be used by parents to pass on any comments or requests to your child's teacher. Please take them home, read them and return each day your child attends.
Programs and Developmental Files
-Parents have the right to access information about their child's program, development and routines. Staff will strive to make all parents feel comfortable when communicating any concerns about their child's care and education. All parents will be given the opportunity to observe, participate and share in their child's care and education.
-In order that children may receive adequate and proper supervision at all times, parents are asked to make an appointment through the Directors or Authorised Supervisor for a time convenient to both parent and teacher for an in-depth discussion or report on their child.
-Regular brief exchanges of information are important and are valued.
-All information gathered is confidential and remains the property of the centre. Records must be kept for the length of time set out in the Children's services Regulations 2004.
Committees
As we are a privately run centre we do not have a management committees but throughout the year we form parent/staff committees to review policies, accreditation matters and discuss relevant issues. We invite and welcome your participation on these committees through our newsletter.
Participation by parents, in the above activities, is encouraged but not enforced.
If there is anything that parents would like to see covered in any of the media, newsletters, meetings etc. we will be happy to include your requests.
